Before I joined Lemongrass Spa, my skincare routine was pretty simple...
Actually, "simple" might be giving it too much credit. π
Like a lot of women, I washed my face with Dial soap in the shower, called it good, and went on with my day. Then I discovered natural skincare and swung completely the other direction. Suddenly I thought I needed every cleanser, serum, mask and moisturizer I could find.
Somewhere along the way, I learned an important lesson.
Healthy skin isn't about using the most products. It's about using the right products in the right order. And every good routine starts with one simple step...
Cleansing.
Have you ever climbed into bed and thought, "I'm just too tired to wash my face tonight?"
Believe me...I've been there.
But your skin has a story to tell at the end of every day.
Maybe you spent the afternoon in the sunshine. Maybe you wore makeup. Maybe it was one of those hot, humid North Carolina days where you felt like you were melting before lunch! π Whatever the day looked like, your skin has been working right alongside you.
Cleansing isn't just washing your face. It's your way of saying, "Okay...let's start fresh." Once your skin is clean, it's ready for the rest of your routine to do what it was designed to do.
One of the questions I get asked all the time is..."Do I really need to wash my face twice a day?"
And my answer is probably not what you're expecting...it depends.
Your skin is as unique as you are, so there isn't one answer that fits everyone. Your skin type, lifestyle, age, hormones, whether you wear makeup, and even the season can all play a role.
βοΈ Morning
While you've been sleeping, your skin hasn't been taking the night off. It's been busy producing natural oils and renewing itself.
A gentle cleanse in the morning washes away those overnight oils and gives your skin a fresh start before you apply moisturizer, sunscreen and head out to face the day.
π Evening
If I had to choose just one cleanse not to skip...this would be it.
By bedtime, your skin has had a full day. Sunscreen, makeup, perspiration, oil, pollen, dust...it all adds up.
Think of your evening cleanse as washing away the day and giving your skin a clean slate before it goes to work repairing and renewing itself overnight.
Now, will you find me climbing into bed every single night with a perfectly cleansed face? Nope. πI'm human, too.
But I can tell a difference when I make cleansing part of my evening routine. My skin simply looks and feels healthier when I give it those few extra minutes before turning out the light.
One of the biggest myths in skincare is that once you find a routine you like, you're set for life.
Wouldn't that be nice? π
The truth is, our skin changes with hormones, stress, the seasons, medications, illness, age and yes...even "that time of the month." That's why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all routine.
I've learned that the best thing you can do is pay attention. Your skin is always giving you little clues. The trick is learning how to listen.
After cleansing, your skin should feel:
β Clean
β Comfortable
β Refreshed
It shouldn't feel:
β Tight
β Dry
β Squeaky
β Irritated
If it does, your cleanser may be removing more than just dirtβit could also be stripping away the natural oils that help protect your skin.
π Wash with lukewarm water, not hot.
π Be gentle. Your fingertips work better than scrubbing.
π Take your time around the hairline and jawline where makeup often lingers.
π Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it with a towel.
Do I need a different cleanser in the morning and evening?
Not always. Many women do well with the same cleanser twice a day, while others find their skin benefits from a gentler morning cleanse and a more thorough evening cleanse.
Should my face feel squeaky clean?
No. Clean skin should feel comfortable, not stripped.
What if I don't wear makeup?
You still benefit from cleansing at night to remove sunscreen, oil and the day's buildup.
