Why Do Kids Hate to Read?  🤬

It is so sad because I was that kid. 

 

Reading was so hard for me, and it did not come easy, so why would I want to do it?

In the last few newsletters, I have been talking about fluency and the purpose of helping kids develop a rhythm with reading, like music. 

 

This is so important to teach kids when they are young because when they get older and start reading more for information, if their voices do not stop at the periods or go up when they see a question mark, it will effect their comprehension.'

 

They will not understand what they are reading. 

 

They will hate reading! 

 

 

One thing you can do help you be aware of the progress your child is making with reading is to time them.  Have a base line for how many words they can read in a minute. Do this every month to see where they are.  

  1. Pick a book or page that your child can read easily.  count the number of words on the page or book.
  2. Help them warn up a bit- like read a few pages.
  3. Then, use a timer and see how many seconds it takes them to read the book or page. 
  4. Take the # of words READ  and divide by number of seconds and then take that # Times 60 to get your children's words per minute rate.
